Adaptive Sports

  • Bowl by hand, using a ball ramp, or with a ball pusher. Bowlers can decide whether or not to use gutter bumpers. Volunteers provide bowlers with any assistance while bowling.

  • Cycle around beautiful Lake Artemesia on a recumbent hand or leg cycle. Cycles, helmets and adaptive aids are provided by MedStar. Volunteers cycle with participants to ensure safety. Participants are welcome to bring their own bikes and equipment.

  • Experience the joy of collective dance and movement at Local Motion Project. You will be encouraged to discover expressive movements unique to you as we explore the elements of dance! All abilities and levels from beginner to experienced welcome!

  • Get your workout in. Use any number of pieces of equipment, including adaptive equipment to exercise and workout. Trained volunteers will provide assistance and ensure safety.

  • Golf at an accessible course using adapted clubs. The equipment, rules, and / or playing field can be modified to fit individual needs. Volunteers will provide assistance.

  • Hike, roll, or stroll through a paved, accessible trail with beautiful scenery. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the walk.

  • Ride a horse at a beautiful farm in the local countryside. Certified staff and trained volunteers are available during the rides to provide assistance and ensure safety. Lifts are available for those needing a hand getting on and off the horse.

  • Climb rock walls at Sportrock gym. Sit climbing is available to any participant. Catalyst DC certified volunteers are available for assistance with traditional and sit climbing, as well as to ensure safety.

  • Experience the sensation of skydiving at iFly. Two of iFly’s trained staff members go with the participant into the wind tunnel to provide assistance and ensure safety.

  • Play pickleball & bocce on an accessible court. The equipment and/or rules can be modified to meet individual needs. Trained volunteers will provide assistance and ensure safety.

  • Raft down the Class I and Class II rapids on the beautiful James River. Trained staff raft with us to provide assistance and ensure safety. Friends and family are welcome to join. All equipment is provided by RVA Paddlesports.

  • Cast off at CRAB’s new Annapolis center and sail the Chesapeake Bay. Members and up to two family members and/or friends can participate in a Sunday Family Sail. A licensed sailor accompanies participants to provide assistance and ensure safety. Each sailboat has a raised seat with a harness and seatbelt for stability.

  • Ski down the slopes of Liberty Mountain with adaptive equipment, including one, two, and/or sit skis. BRASS certified volunteers ski with you to maximize the fun and ensure safety. Equipment and adaptations are provided.

Recreation & Social

Family and friends are always welcome at recreation and social activities.

  • Show your creative side as we get together for fun arts and crafts. Bring your own supplies or use supplies provided. Volunteers will provide assistance.

  • Come play your favorite board or card game while socializing. Bring your own game or play one of the games provided.

  • Enjoy a night out at a local music concert. We attend various venues and enjoy all kinds of music.

  • Socialize while enjoying drinks and/or appetizers or good meal at a local restaurant. We go to restaurants and pubs near metro stations for convenient transportation.

  • Attend local movie theaters and catch a show with us. Theaters are wheelchair accessible. Volunteers will provide assistance.

  • Explore history, see cool artifacts, or amazing paintings at local museums. We visit Smithsonian museums on the National Mall or others local to the Washington DC area.

  • Be bold with colors while we paint beautiful pictures and enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Paint and materials will be provided.

  • Bring your own basket as we eat, share stories, and have a good time at a local park. The park is wheelchair accessible.

  • Cheer on your favorite athletes from the stands. Sporting venues are wheelchair accessible and volunteers will provide assistance.

  • Attend a theater production with us at a local theater. Theaters are wheelchair accessible.
